Textiles have always been about gathering, communicating, and belonging across generations. Together, you and a youth in your life, will create woven pieces where threads become a language of connection. Stories, knowledge, and care have long been carried through the patient movement of hands working with fibres. In this workshop, participants will learn basic weaving techniques while collaboratively creating a small woven artwork to take home.

This workshop is designed for one adult and one youth to participate together. All materials will be provided.

One adult ticket purchase is mandatory for every child ticket purchased.

September 15-17, 2026 (Three-part Workshop)
$120 | General
$100 | Members
This is a three-part weaving workshop exploring the textile traditions of Crete, Greece. Participants will learn the basics of weaving and working on a frame loom while discovering the symbolism, motifs, techniques, and cultural significance of Cretan weaving.

The workshop offers an introduction to weaving followed by a deepening of techniques, adapted from traditional Cretan floor looms for the frame loom. Through guided practice, participants will learn techniques and weave motifs commonly found in Cretan textiles and across the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, creating a finished piece to take home.

Textiles offer a space to deepen our understanding of the context that gave birth to this material culture, exploring collective memory and celebrating the unseen women whose hands and knowledge have provided for us all. Through materials, textures, shapes, techniques, tools and sounds a sense of place is created.

All materials will be provided. Participants will also receive a gift of naturally dyed wool from Crete, a tactile memory of the island to take home.

LOCATION: Greek Orthodox Church, 40 Donlands Ave, Toronto, ON M4J 3N6, Canada
This workshop is being held offsite at the Greek Orthodox Church (40 Donlands Ave, Toronto).

In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of natural dyeing, using plants to colour fibres. You will experiment with a variety of plant dyes and modifiers, producing a range of shades on different natural fibres. Through this process, you will learn about the relationship between plants, fibres, and traditional textile practices, gaining insight into the origins of the materials that surround us. As we work, we will explore how colour emerges and reflects both the plants used and the landscape from which they come.

During the workshop, you will dye an item to take home.

All materials will be provided.
